Carnegie Mellon is offering “Summer Sunday Series 2008” on July 13 and 20. The program for July 13 involves choosing a college and the financial aid process. Any eleventh grade student who is interested in learning about appointments to the service academies should consider attending an informational session hosted by Congressman Tim Murphy at Mt. Lebanon High School on Saturday, May 10, at 9:00 a.m. The meeting will take place in Room 447 at the school. Representatives from the separate academies will be available to give an overview of the nomination process and to discuss any questions regarding this process.

UPMC Mercy will once again sponsor a Junior Volunteer Program. Eligible students must be in high school and at least 14 years of age by July 1, 2008. Students will need a letter of reference, be expected to attend an orientation session in June, and volunteer at least one day per week. | Bethany College will be hosting Tolerate This!, a conference celebrating and exploring different lifestyles and cultures. Through this conference, students will have the opportunity to interact with students from across the area as they experience activities designed to shed light on other cultures and ideas. Students in grades ten, eleven, and twelve are invited to participate. The event will be held on Saturday, April 12, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Bethany College. Magee-Women’s Hospital is looking for junior volunteers between the ages of 14 and 17 to work in various areas of the hospital. There are also opportunities to volunteer in the Children’s Playroom at the South Hills satellite center of Magee. Applications are available in the Guidance Office; all applications must be submitted by May 5…space is limited. Interviews will begin in late April.

Point Park University once again is sponsoring Summer in the City, a two-week workshop where students write, direct, and edit their own short films. Students may commute or be residents. Women the the Sciences and Engineering Institute will offer a camp from June 22 to June 28 for young women who have a strong interest in math, science, and/or engineering. Penn State Greater Allegheny is holding “A Day in the Life of a Penn State Student” on Monday, February 18, from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Students who wish to attend must provide their own transportation to Penn State. The Summer Leaders Seminar at West Point offers a concentrated week of academic, athletic, and social experiences. This is a good opportunity for students who may have an interest in attending West Point. There are two sessions, June 7 – 13 and June 14 – 20. The cost is $325. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is holding its MITES Program for six weeks this summer, June 18 to August 2. Carnegie Mellon is offering Andrew’s Leap from June 23 to August 8. This enrichment program has very limited enrollment; students are selected based on their performance on the “Interesting Test.” The cost of the program is $3180. This is not a residential program. Lebanon Valley College will offer the Daniel Fox Youth Scholars Institute from June 22 to 27 this year. The program offers workshops in science, social science, or humanities. Students who are identified gifted or who have scored in the gifted range on the PSAT, SAT, or ACT have the opportunity to attend the Summer Institute for the Gifted, a programthat combines academic courses with cultural, social, and recreational opportunities. Oxford Academic Programs will be available this summer in a variety of locations abroad. The cost for each program is $6795, excluding airfare, lunch, and personal expenses. Applications and a $1000 deposit are due by February 1. Late applications may be accepted depending upon program availability. Applications are available from Mrs. Barringer.
Any tenth or eleventh grade student is eligible to apply for a scholarship to attend the Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week during one of the five, one-week sessions throughout the summer. The programs takes place at either Lycoming College or the Pennsylvania College of Technology. Attendees will lean about our fee enterprise system by turning an imaginary company into a success. You will determine selling prices, marketing costs, budges for production, research and development, financing, and stock options. Applicants must meet the March 7 deadline and submit a non-refundable $135 registration fee. For an application, see Mrs. Barringer.
The Washington Internship Experience is a three-week experience that costs $3750 for students who are interested in government and politics. Students live at Marymount University during the program. Interested students should see Mrs. Barringer.
Students interested in goal setting, public speaking, conflict resolution, tam building, and career simulations may be interested in attending the National Student Leadership Conference this summer. The Princeton Review is offering a Free Practice SAT test and strategy session. Each student will receive a detailed score report displaying their strengths and weaknesses as well as some SAT tips.
The test will be offered on Sunday, December 2, 2007, from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Carnegie Mellon University.

Exploring is offering students ages 14 to 20 the opportunity to be part of Fire and Emergency Serive with the Pleasant Hills Volunteer Fire Company. The Carnegie Museum of Natural History is looking for volunteers to participate in the Teen Docent Program. As part of this program, you will receive seven days of intensive training and, upon completion, will be stationed in various areas withing the museum of natural history.
Students must be between the ages of 13 anf 17, recommended by a teacher, be mature, reliable, enthusiastic, and have an outgoing personality. Applicatons must be received the the museum no later than January 15, 2008. Please see Mrs. Barringer for an application.

The Benjamin Franklin Scholar Award is open to public high school students in Pennsylvania in their junior year. This award will provide three prizes: first place $3,000; second place $2,000, and third place $1,000.
Guidelines for the Benjamin Franklin Scholar Award
- Applicants for the Benjamin Franklin Scholar Award must:
- Be a junior in good standing at a public high school in Pennsylvania.
- Fully complete the required application form.
- Write an essay of not more than 750 words discussing the modern day relevance and applicability of the following writing of Benjamin Franklin: “Freedom is not a gift bestowed upon us by other men, but a right that belongs to us by the laws of God and nature.”
- Submit the application form and essay to Mrs. Adams by October 10, 2007.
- The selected essays must be submitted as a Word document and the name of the student and the high school must appear on each essay.
