| ART HONOR SOCIETY draws
from the talents of art students dedicated to excellence in
the arts and the promotion of art programs such as: Artist
in Residence, trips, community exhibits, and student services.
Membership is open to tenth through twelfth grade students
who have taken at least one visual arts class the previous
year and earned at least a "B" average. To maintain
membership, students must continue taking at least one semester
course in art each year and earn a minimum "B" average. |
| BALDWINAIRES is an auditioned
singing group which focuses on a capella music. The Baldwinaires
sing at school assemblies, take part in three major choral
concerts, attend music department festival trips, and participate
in community events. |
| BALTHI, the BHS yearbook,
preserves students' memories of their high school years. Staff
production responsibilities include photography, journalism,
sales, and layout and design. This club provides the opportunity
for valuable experience in the areas of business management,
communications, and graphic design. |
| CHEERLEADERS perform
at sporting events, promote school spirit, attend summer collegiate
camps, and participate in competitions. Tryouts are held in
the spring. Cheerleading is a year-round activity. |
| CONCERT BAND wants you
if you play a band instrument. Like all other music classes,
you will receive one full credit for band. Strike up the band! |
| DANCE TEAM performs
at varsity basketball games as well as selected school activities.
Practices are held after school as needed during the fall
and winter months. Tryouts are open to grades 9-12 and are
held in the spring. Formal dance training is preferred, but
not required. |
| DRAMA CLUB strives to
present at least two productions each year, a fall play and
spring musical. These productions work in conjunction with
the Stage/Sound Crew and help in the development and enhancement
of theater skills both on stage and behind the scenes. |
| FBLA
(Future Business Leaders of America) gives business students
an opportunity to develop business leadership skills, as well
as compete in business contests with other schools on a regional,
state, and national level. |
| FISHING
CLUB (Family Tyes) features rod building, fly
tying, steelhead, and casting instruction. The club organizes
day trips to local streams and lakes, three weekend overnight
trips and an annual dream trip to Montana. Students are introduced
to the business aspects of sales, promotion, and other opportunities

| FITNESS CLUB promotes
personal fitness among the faculty and student body. The club
holds regular meetings, and daily workouts are available before
and after school in the weight room. The club works with other
groups who use the weight room to help maintain a clean, neat,
and excellent place to workout. The club also raises money
to provide extra items needed to help promote fitness and
to enhance the facility. |
| FRENCH CLUB (La Liaison
Francaise) welcomes any student interested in discovering
various aspects of the French culture. Traditionally, the
club has held dances, fundraisers, a Buche de Noel contest,

GERMAN CLUB exists as
a means for students with an interest in German to explore
and experience German Culture. Past activities have included
an Octoberfest, holiday activities, a scavenger hunt (downtown),
and many opportunities to sample German food.

| HIGHLANDER CHOIR, BHS's
largest chorus of mixed voices, performs during the holiday
season and in the spring. The choir is open to sophomore,
junior, and senior students who enjoy singing. This group is by audition only. |
| KEY CLUB is a community,
school, and individual service organization. |
| THE LITERARY GUILD
is for anyone who enjoys reading and creative
writing. Think of it this way: The Guild is part Book Club
and part Writing Workshop. Guild members choose a novel, and
then a few weeks later they meet to discuss and debate that
book. In the meantime, some Guild meetings focus on reading
short stories and poems by renowned writers, while other meetings
give Guild members the chance to bring in their own stories
and poems for the group to enjoy. |
| MATH LEAGUE is for that
student who enjoys the challenge of solving clever math problems.
Members participate in six monthly Pennsylvania Mathematics
League contests and have the opportunity for selection to
the annual American High School Mathematics Examination and
subsequent competitions. |
| MODEL UNITED NATIONS
is for the student who enjoys the study of international affairs.
Members attend and participate in conferences at various colleges
and universities, allowing them to compare their skills against
schools from across the North American continent. |
| NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
is an organization based upon high academic standards, qualifications,
and the demonstration of leadership potential. Students serve
as peer tutors and as participants in several community projects. |
| ORCHESTRA at BHS is
recognized as one of the largest in Western Pennsylvania.
String players schedule orchestra as a class. Wind and percussion
players are chosen from concert band and stage band. |
| PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB offers
students the opportunity to learn the basics of composition,
design, and the photographic process. |
| PURBALITE
produces six issues a year through finding news, developing
photos, and laying out pages using desktop publishing. In
addition, the staff members sell advertising space and newspapers
to support the production of the newspaper which is 95 percent
self-supporting. As a result, the students are running a small
nonprofit business as well as gaining journalistic experience.
All students have opportunities to attend workshops sponsored

| RED CROSS CLUB is a
community service oriented club. It provides many worthwhile
projects within the community and provides the members with
the opportunity to learn leadership skills. The members have
opportunities to interact and meet members from other school
clubs by getting involved in the Saturday meeting at the downtown
American Red Cross base unit. |
| S.A.V.E. (Students Aware
of the Value of the Earth) is dedicated to educating all Baldwin
students about environmental problems and working to discover
ways to solve them. |
| SCIENCE CLUB meets regularly
to prepare for the county Envirothon which is held annually
in the spring. Current issues in science will be discussed
and examined using guest speakers, experiments, videos, and
demonstrations. |
| SPANISH
CLUB is comprised of members who share an interest
in discovering more about such aspects of Hispanic and Latin
American cultures as food, music, dance, and the Spanish Language
itself. This club is involved in such activities as sponsoring
a Latin American child, holding annual "Cinco de Mayo"
celebrations, and sampling ethnic foods. Students in all grade
levels are eligible to join. |
| SPECIAL
OLYMPICS CLUB is dedicated to combining the
lives of high school teenagers with the lives of individuals
with developmental disabilities. Special Olympics Club completely
focuses on community service, planning, and running the Special
Olympics Summer Games. Students assume leadership roles while
networking with leaders of major corporations toward a common
goal. Hard work, dedication, caring, sharing, and having fun
are all incorporated in the Special Olympics Club. As a member
of Special Olympics Club, you are an integral part of making
the Allegheny County Special Olympics Summer Games a complete
success. |
| SPEECH AND DEBATE allows
for competition in areas of policy and Lincoln Douglas Debate,
Congressional Debate, and dramatic interpretation. |
| STAGE BAND is Baldwin's
instrumental jazz specialist. Instrumentation is limited to
sax, trombone, trumpet, keyboard, percussion, guitar, and
bass. Membership is by audition only. |
| STAGE/SOUND CREW is
comprised of a team of students working together to provide
lighting and sound for various productions, which take place
in the Baldwin High School Auditorium. |
| STUDENT COUNCIL, a leadership
organization, is comprised of an executive board and selected
representatives from each grade level. This organization sponsors
a wide variety of activities ranging from all homecoming events
to the talent show. Members are also responsible for the annual
leadership luncheon, the Forum for the Future, and the annual
Activities Summit. |
| SYMPHONIC/MARCHINGBAND
includes the bandfront as well as the instrumentalists. The
band performs at football games as well as competing at various
area band competitions. Practice is held for two weeks prior
to the start of school, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings,
and other times as necessary. |
| T. I. SPARKS,
an award winning student activity program, strives to eliminate
partying with drugs and alcohol by generating positive attitudes
and providing positive alternatives. The club provides students
with leadership opportunities through planning and sponsoring
school, community, and business activities. |
| VIDEO PRODUCTIONS CLUB
teaches students about pre-production, production and post-production
techniques in order to videotape school activities and to
create individual projects. |
| WEB PAGE CLUB teaches
students to create web pages using Dreamweaver, Flash, Photoshop,
and other software packages. Students learn how to incorporate
all aspects of multimedia into web sites. Text, graphics,
sounds, animations, video, and interactivity are incorporated
into the Baldwin High School web site. The students are responsible
for creating and updating the high school's web site on a
regular basis. |
| PTSA (Parent Teacher
Student Association) is an organization whose members are
parents, teachers, students, and interested community members.
The PTSA provides services to benefit students in educational
and social areas and maintains a source of information for
adults. Those who join automatically become members of the
State and National PTA. The mission of PTA is to support and
speak on behalf of children and youth and to assist in the
development of parenting skills. It unites home, school, and
community in promoting the education, and health and safety
of children, youth, and families. |
